Loughborough University graduation day transport guide

Graduation day is one of the proudest days for a student and their family. It is also a busy, crowded day, with lots of guests heading to the same place at the same time. Good transport planning means you can enjoy the ceremony rather than worrying about parking or lifts. This guide gives you practical ideas for getting your graduation party to and from Loughborough smoothly.
Why graduation day transport needs planning
Graduation ceremonies bring hundreds of families into a small area on the same day. Roads near the campus are busy, parking is limited and guests are often dressed in formal clothes and unsuitable shoes. Grandparents may find long walks tiring, and younger children can quickly become restless.
If your family is travelling from another part of the country, or even from overseas, the plans multiply. Somebody has to collect guests from the station or airport, get them to the venue in good time and bring everyone home after the celebration meal.
Rather than relying on several cars and a lot of text messages, many families book one group vehicle for the day.
Keep the whole family together
A private 8 seater means graduate, parents, grandparents and siblings all travel in one vehicle. Nobody has to hunt for a parking space, and the whole group arrives together for photographs. You can also arrange the return, so the family travels to the celebration lunch or dinner and then home afterwards.
Because the vehicle is private, you decide when to leave. If the photographs take longer than planned, or the ceremony overruns, the plan can adapt. Our university student taxi page explains more about the group travel we offer in Loughborough.
Ideas for the day
Here is a simple plan many families follow:
- Morning pick-up. Dan collects the family from home, a hotel or the station and takes them to the ceremony in good time.
- After the ceremony. The group takes photographs and enjoys the celebration.
- Lunch or dinner. A second journey takes everyone to a restaurant or venue in Loughborough or a nearby town.
- Evening return. Dan brings the family back to their accommodation or home.
Agree the times in advance, but stay flexible. Graduation days rarely run precisely to schedule.
Collecting guests from stations and airports
Many guests will arrive by train or plane. Loughborough has its own station, and Leicester, Derby and Nottingham are within reach. For international guests, East Midlands Airport is only around 15 minutes away, and we offer a fixed price for the transfer. Read more on our East Midlands Airport taxi page.
If your relatives are flying into Heathrow or Birmingham, we can also arrange transfers from those airports, with flight tracking so that Dan is there when they land.
Luggage and belongings
Graduation often coincides with the end of the year, so the graduate may need to move belongings out of their student house. A group vehicle helps here too. Tell Dan what you are moving, and he will confirm the space. For a larger clear-out, it may be best to plan a separate journey before the ceremony day.
Accessibility
If elderly relatives or family members with limited mobility are attending, mention this when you book. A door to door pick-up avoids long walks from car parks, and a driver who knows the town can drop you as close as possible to the entrance. It also removes the stress of trying to find a space near the venue.
Celebrating safely
After the ceremony, the celebrations often continue. A pre-booked return journey means nobody has to drive after a glass of champagne, and the graduate and friends can enjoy the evening. Dan is available seven days a week, day and night, and will agree a pick-up time or collect you when you call.
If the party continues into town with friends, our night out minibus service is a safe way to get everyone home.
Practical tips for graduation day
- Book early. Ceremony days are busy for local transport, so reserve your date as soon as you know it.
- Confirm the timings. Check your ceremony time and arrival instructions with the university.
- Share the details. Send Dan the addresses, the number of guests and any special requirements.
- Allow extra time. Roads around the venue may be busier than usual.
- Plan the return. Decide whether you want a fixed collection time or a flexible pick-up.
